"We reject the proposal and we call on ASEAN leaders to do the same."
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - ASEAN`s Inter-Parliamentary Caucus (AIPC) rejects Myanmar`s proposal to lead ASEAN in 2014, President of the caucus Eva Kusuma Sundari said here on Monday.

"We reject the proposal and we call on ASEAN leaders to do the same until Myanmar`s government shows serious steps to support the implementation of human rights and democracy in its country," Eva said.

Eva said the parliamentary general election conducted in the country last 2010 was not democratic. "According to information from pro-democracy activists in Myanmar, the military in that country continues to maintain its control over the parliament," she said.

A member of AIPC, Lily Wahid, also suggested the same thing to leaders of ASEAN saying that the Myanmar government still shows authoritarian attitude towards the opposition party. She also called on the Myanmar government to soon free the 2,000 political activists who were still detained in Myanmar jails.

Meanwhile, Myanmar`s pro-democracy activist Thwin Linn Aung urged the Myanmar government to stop launching attacks on certain ethnic minorities and start building an inclusive dialogue to ensure the continuation of transition era upon the implementation of democracy and human rights in Myanmar.
