Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Indonesia Navy will purchase two undersea and surface mapping surveyor ships for defense, military and public service purposes, a senior navy officer said.

"We have invited open bid to the public for the purchase of the two ships," Navay Deputy Chief Vice Admiral Marsetio said.

He said that a number of companies and countries had offered their bids but the Navy had not yet decided. "We call a tender for the purchase of the two ships through the required processes," he said.

Marsetio said that the procurement of the two undersea and surface mapping surveyor ships was important to maximize hydro-graphic and oceanographic data collection activities.

He said that Indonesia needed to conduct undersea and surface survey and mapping activities to know in details the conditions of its waters.

At present, the Navy`s Hidro-Oceanography Service has five warships, two surveyor ships and two trainer ships.
