Palembang (ANTARA News) - South Sumatra province`s imports in the first four months of 2011 reached US$156.57 million, up 46.41 percent from the same period last year.

Non-oil/non-gas imports rose 48.84 percent to US$153.087 million and oil/gas imports 18.52 percent to US$3.851 million, Head of the South Sumatra Provincial Statistics Office Haslani Haris said here on Sunday.

He said the import of top ten non-oil/non-gas commodities in the four months through April reached US$124.68 million, accounting for 81.26 percent of the province`s overall imports over the period.

Machines/mechanical appliances contributed 52.61 percent to the overall non-oil/non-gas imports in the January-April 2011 period, followed by fertilizers 13.24 percent.

In April 2011 alone, imports more than doubled to US$53.05 million from US$25.846 million in March. China remained on top as the supplier of imported goods to South Sumatra with US$14.67 million or 27.65 percent of the overall imports in the first four months of 2011.

Nearly 73.86 percent of China`s exports to South Sumatra was made up of machines/mechanical appliances.

India trailed behind in second place with US$5.91 million or 11.14 percent. More than 98.61 percent of South Sumatra`s imports from India in April was made up of vehicles and spare parts.

Compared to the same period last year, South Sumatra`s imports from 12 main countries in the January-April 2011 period rose 37.35 percent, he said.

Meanwhile, South Sumatra`s exports in April 2011 reached US$470.60 million consisting of oil/gas worth US$33.94 million and non-oil/non-gas commodities worth US$436.66 million.
