Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Jakarta administration has banned the sale and burning of firecrackers during the Islamic fasting month next month because the activity could disrupt fasting and also was dangerous.

"We have agreed to ban firecrackers during Ramadhan. We will implement it first by a sweep against the sale of firecrackers in the markets as we have done before," Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo said here on Thursday.

The governor held a meeting with regional administrative and police leaders to conduct coordination ahead of the fasting month.

He said sweeps would also be conducted at the entry gates to Jakarta such as the Tanah Abang, Jatinegara, Senen and Manggarai railway stations as well as Kampung Rambutan and Pulogadung bus terminals.

Fauzi Bowo appealed to the people not to burn any type of firecrackers during the month to respect Moslems who observe the fasting in the period.

The chief of the city`s public order police, Effendi Anas, said the firecrackers collected from sweeps would be soaked in water to ensure they could no longer be used or sold.
