Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia is to adopt an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) gradually beginning in 2012, a senior transportation official said.

Deputy Transportation Minister Bambang Susantono said an ITS was the combination of a transportation system with information technology to improve the accessibility, efficiency and safety of transportation.

Speaking to newsmen after opening a seminar on Intelligent Transport System here Monday, Bambang said Indonesia would institute an ITS gradually beginning next year.

Bambang said, in concrete terms, the adoption of ITS would enable prospective public transport users to access real time information about traffic conditions before deciding on which transportation mode he or she would use.

Another example, according to him, was that trains would be equipped with certain technological devices to prevent collisions between trains on the same railway track.

"The device will automatically make the two trains stop at a certain distance from each other," Bambang said.

He said an Intelligent Transport System in Indonesia was also part of similar activity at regional and international levels.

"ITS Indonesia was formed in April 26, 2011," Bambang said, explaining that it has been started sporadically by a number of stakeholders in Indonesia.

He said the funding of ITS in Indonesia did not come from the state budget (APBN) but from the commitment of the stakeholders only.

Bambang admitted that the scope of the intelligent transport system in general was made up of the utilization of information systems and modern navigation, traffic management, traffic accident management, and electronically collection of transport payments.
