Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Jakarta police plan to conduct operations against thugs and street criminals for two weeks from August 2 to 14, chief of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police`s operations bureau Senior Commissioner Sujarno said here on Friday.

"We have a series of operations to create a conducive situation ahead of Ramadhan until Indul Fitri and one of them is `Operation Kilat Jaya`," he said.

He said Operation Kilat Jaya would be carried out to anticipate crimes such as violent burglaries and the burning of firecrackers and abuse alcoholic drinks as well as to ensure security ahead of the commemoration of the country`s independence anniversary.

He said police predict crimes would rise during Ramadhan and ahead of Idul Fitri post-fasting festivities due to increasing needs of the people during the period.

He said the police had already mapped out areas which are vulnerable to crimes.

He said the Jakarta police also plan to conduct a "Operation Ketupat " seven days before and after the Idul Fitri to ensure the smooth flows of holiday travellers.

He said three Operation Ketupat checkpoints would be set up in the capital, namely in West, East and South Jakarta.
