Pattani (ANTARA News) - Rival groups of inmates rioted in Pattani provincial central prison, Monday, morning resulting in one prisoner dead and two others, including a Myanmar national, injured, according to Pattani deputy governor Lertkiat Wongphothipan.

The dead man was a well-behaved prisoner who facilitated the work of the prison`s wardens. The two other injured inmates have been hospitalised.

Speaking to reporters after supervising riot control at the prison, Mr Lertkiat said about 50 inmates involved in the clash. Preliminary investigation found that one group of prisoners from Narathiwat provincial prison and other inmates from Yala prison complained about unfair treatment in the prison.

The situation has been partially brought under control, the deputy governor said.

He added that he had talked with five inmates representing the rioters who demanded that strict prison regulations should be relaxed. In addition, they also demanded that those who caused the riot should be removed to another prison.
