Jakarta (ANTARA News) - An Informal ASEAN Ministerial Meeting will be organized in New York on September 24, 2011, on the sidelines of the 66th United Nations (UN) General Assembly (GA), the foreign affairs ministry said.

The meeting would be chaired by Foreign Affairs Minister Marty M. Natalegawa and bring together ASEAN Foreign Ministers for deliberations on a range of international issues of common concern, the foreign ministry said in a press release here on Saturday.

The Informal Meeting will discuss a number of issues in which both ASEAN and the UN share common interests.

In line with the theme of the 66th UN-GA, ?The role of mediation in the settlement of disputes by peaceful means?, these issues include ongoing efforts toward conflict resolution, conflict management and peacekeeping-peacebuilding, to which ASEAN Member States make a significant contribution.

The Informal Meeting will also consider how to better synergize ASEAN`s agenda with that of the UN, which will reflect an enhanced role of ASEAN in international fora, in particular the UN.

The Informal Meeting will be part of a series including the ASEAN-UN Secretary-General and President of the UN General Assembly Meeting in New York on September 27, 2011, where many of the issues considered at the Informal Meeting will be discussed further.

Other meetings include the ASEAN-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Ministerial Meeting on September 23, and the Meeting of the Extended Troika of the Rio Group with ASEAN on September 27.(*)
