Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesian Defense Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro has received a medal of honor from the Russian Government for his role in enhancing the two countries` bilateral relations, especially in military cooperation.

The "Medal for Strengthening Combat Fraternity" was conferred on Purnomo by Russian Ambassador to Indonesia Alexander Ivanov here on Tuesday, based on the Russian Government decree No.857 dated July 19,2011.

"It is an award that we give to Defense Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro who has played a role in improving bilateral relations between Indonesia and Russia, especially in military cooperation," Alexander Ivanov said.

Ivanov added that the award was given not only to the Indonesian defense minister but also to the individuals for their contribution to fostering and enhancing defense and military cooperation with the Russian Federal Government.

Meanwhile, Purnomo expressed his pride with the award he has received from the Russian Government.

"I am very proud to receive this award which is intended not only for me personally but also for the rank and file of the Defense Ministry for increasing the two countries`s relations in defense," Purnomo said.

Purnomo on the occasion told about his experience of trying out a number of Russian-made military equipment such as Sukhoi jet fighters and amphibious tanks, bought by the Indonesian Government from Russia.

"When I tried out Sukhoi jet fighters and amphibious tanks, I felt Russian-made military equipment was quite comfortable and safe," said the Indonesian defense minister.
