United Nations (ANTARA News) - Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas will hand over a formal application for the state of Palestine to be granted full UN membership on Friday at 1535 GMT, a top Palestinian official said.

Palestinian envoy to the United Nations, Riyad Mansour, confirmed to AFP late Thursday that Abbas would hand over the letter at a meeting planned with UN chief Ban Ki-moon on Friday morning.

Frustrated by the deadlock in the Middle East peace process, Abbas has pressed ahead despite fierce opposition from Israel and the United States with his campaign for full state membership of the United Nations for the Palestinians.

The United States, a permanent Security Council member, has said it will veto any bid that comes to the council, where the Palestinians would need to win nine votes from the 15 members.

The Palestinians could also go to the UN General Assembly however to be given non-member observer state status. This could not be vetoed.(*)
