Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara (ANTARA News) - Timor Leste`s foreign minister Zcarias Albano da Costa said problems involving three segments of the land border with Indonesia would be settled this year.

The three segments are in Oekusi District , namely in the villages of Manusasi and Memo in the subdistrict of Miomafo Timur in the district of Timor Tengah Utara and in the village of Noelbesi, in the subdistrict of North Amfoang in the district of Kupang, he said to newsmen after meeting with East Nusa Tenggara governor Frans Lebu Raya here on Tuesday.

"Last March we have held meetings with Indonesian foreign minister Marty Natalegawa and will settle them this year," he said.

Zcarias was in Kupang to attend the dedication of a new Timor Leste Consulate building located not far away from the office of the East Nusa Tenggara governor.

After the border at the three segments is settled the governments of the two countries would form a joint border committee (JBC) to discuss technical issues related to border including sea border between the two countries.

Around 40 families of Timor Leste have claimed the disputed location of Noelbesi. In 2008 the Timor Leste government even established an immigration post there.

In the disputed location in the village of Manusasi the Timor Leste government has once also tried to build a police station but it was asked to stop it.

He said his side was now also seeking possibilities for building economic cooperation between businessmen from Timor Leste and East Nusa Tenggara.

With the settlement of the border the relations between the two countries would be better and so efforts to improve the welfare of the people of the two countries could be more easily achieved, he said.

"If the border problem could be overcome peace will come to support implementation of development efforts in the two countries," he said.

Governor Frans Lebu Raya meanwhile expressed support to the cooperation between the two regions that have so far been built among others through sports.

"We welcome the cooperation offer from Timor Leste, which will certainly be followed up further involving a number of components such as the chamber of commerce and industry (Kadin)," he said.(*)
