Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Muhammad Nazaruddin, a suspect in the Palembang` athletes dormitory project bribery case, failed to attend his court trial at the Jakarta Corruption Court here Wednesday because he was reportedly ill.

The public prosecutor read out a letter from Nazaruddin, a former Democrat Party politician, stating that he could not come because he was sick.

Yulius Sumarli, a doctor from the Cipinang Detention Center, who was present at the court session, said Nazaruddin had complained about pain in his guts, nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite.

"We examined the defendant`s state of health and concluded he is ailing to a moderate extent." Yulius said.

Elaborating, Julius said Nazaruddin vomited four times shortly before he was about to leave the prison for the court, and therefore the Cipinang Detention Center`s doctor team recommended a further health check-up, and as a consequence, he could not attend Wednesday`s court session.

Hotman Paris Hutapea, Nazaruddin`s lawyer, confirmed that his client was undergoing medical treatment and being infused.

Last January 4, a Jakarta Corruption Court session scheduled to hear witnesses in M Nazaruddin`s case had to be adjourned after a one-hour suspension as the defendant was unwell.

"This trial session is adjourned until next week (Jan 11) to give the defendant a chance to recover," presiding judge Darmawati said then.

Earlier. a physician of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), Johannes Hutabarat, had checked Nazaruddin`s state of health and said the former Democrat Party treasurer was suffering from lack of sleep.

Johannes Hutabarat also said Nazaruddin had a potential gastric disorder and his blood pressure had dropped to 100/80.

"He needs to take a rest of at least two or three days to recover but it also depends on the doctor who will treat him," Johannes said.

According to Johannes, Nazaruddin`s condition could have worsened if the trial session had not been stopped because any questions or mental pressure could have worsened his condition.
