Sampit, Central Kalimantan (ANTARA News) - Juliadi, a six-year old boy in Kotawaringing Timur (Kotim) district, Central Kalimantan, died of dengue fever last week, a local health official said here on Tuesday.

"Juliadi died of dengue fever at the Dr Murjani General Hospital in Sampit on Wednesday, January 11, 2012," Kotim health office chief Triono said, adding the victim was in critical condition when he was admitted to the hospital.

Triono said since the past two weeks at least 28 dengue fever flu patients had been admitted to the hospital and the number was feared to increase because almost all parts of Kotawaringin Timur was dengue endemic.

"The dengue fever outbreak in Kotawaringin Timur was declared an extraordinary happening in October 2011 and until now the declaration still stands because the number of victims continues to increase," Triono said.

According to him, between October and the end of December 2011 at least seven dengue fever patients had died and hundreds of others were treated in a number of hospitals.

He added the local health office had made every effort to prevent and eradicate the deadly disease by conducting mass fogging but the effort seemed not have been very successful.
