Jayapura (ANTARA News) - Armed men believed to be members of the separatist Free Papua Organization (OPM) shot and killed a civilian in Kurilik, Mulia, Puncak Jaya district, on Friday night, local police said.

The victim, Kisma Rafiq, was shot in the back while he was tending his kiosk at about 20,00 local time. He died on the spot and the gunmen disappeared, Puncak Jaya police chief Adjunct Senior Commissioner Alek Korwa said when contacted from Jayapura on Saturday.

People who were in the neighborhood had heard repeated gun shots but did not immediately know what had really happened. This and foggy weather were the reason Kisma`s body could not be evacuated immediately, Alek said.

Kisma`s body could be taken to a hospital in Mulia only at 23.00 local time and was later airlifted to Jayapura for further transportation to his home-town in Padang, West Sumatra, he said.

Asked about the security situation in Mulia town and environs, Alek said it was "relatively conducive" but all police personnel in the region had been instructed to observe "constant vigilance." .(*)
