Kano, Nigeria (ANTARA News) - Nigerian police in northwest Kano State on Saturday said unidentified gunmen shot dead a private photographer during a shootout.

State police spokesperson Magaji Majiya confirmed the death reported on Friday to Xinhua in Kano, the state capital, saying that security operatives have cordoned off the area and that investigation has also commenced.

Majiya also said security had been tightened in the area in order to ensure the return to normalcy.

Security sources said the suspected gunmen on motorcycle arrived and started shooting sporadically.

A witness said the photographer was trying to cross the main road when stray bullets hit him in the chest. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but died on the way, the witness told Xinhua.
