Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Association of Indonesian Migrant Workers (SBMI) deplores the shooting to death of three Indonesian migrant workers by Malaysian police on March 25, said SBMI chief Nisma Abdullah here on Wednesday.

In connection with this incident, SBMI urged the government to settle the case in such a manner as to prevent any such incident from recurring in the future.

"This is not the first incident affecting Indonesian migrant workers in Malaysia," she pointed out.

Nisma stated that the Malaysian police had shot dead Herman (34), Abdul Kadir Jaelani (25) and Mad Nur (28) merely upon the suspicion that they would commit robbery.

"The Malaysian police should not have resorted to killing them without legal process," she stressed.

Nisma added that the police should have arrested the three workers according to police procedures, without firing any shots.

Meanwhile, a member of the Indonesia Legal Aid Institute, Pratiwi Febry, has criticized the Indonesian government for its lack of strong commitment to protecting the country`s workers abroad.

According to Pratiwi, what happened to the Indonesian migrant workers could have been prevented if the Indonesian government had shown strong commitment to protecting Indonesian migrant workers.

She observed that the number of Indonesian migrant workers dispatched abroad keeps increasing every year.

"Around seven million Indonesian migrant workers are now working abroad, and around 80 percent of them are women working in the domestic sector," she added.***1***
