"The government is ready to provide attractive incentives."
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian government will provide incentives for cellular phone producers who make their investment in Indonesia in an effort to attract foreign investors, a senior official said.

"Up to now, no companies have expressed interest to make their investment in Indonesia but the government is ready to provide attractive incentives (for those making investment in Indonesia)," Director General for High Technology-based Industry Budi Darmadi said here on Monday.

Budi said that the government was of the view that it should be fair in treating firms in Indonesia, particularly between firms which built and marketed their products in Indonesia and those which only marketed their products in the country.

"It is important to adopt such an attitude. The ministry of industry is proposing to impose a luxury good import duty (PPnBM) on imported CBU hand phones and to require them to to register their International Mobile Equipment Identy (IMEI) numbers. Besides on hand phone, the ministry also proposed the imposition of PPnBM on CBU laptop imports," he said.

Research In Motion (RIM) Indonesia Country Manager Ardo Fadhola said his side was ready to face if the Indonesian government decided to tighten the importation of BlackBerry cellular phones.

"We have taken preventive measures to prevent the presence of unofficial Blackberry hand phones. All BlackBerry hand phones sold in Indonesia must come from the official importers," he said.
