Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesian Police Criminal Investigators are investigating the alleged embezzlement of funds from Greenpeace`s 30,000 donors in Indonesia as reported by the Alliance of Students Rejecting Foreign NGOs.

Senior Commissioner Listyo Sigit Prabowo of the Police Criminal Investigation Department said here on Tuesday Police had begun investigating the student alliance`s report.

"We will study deeper about the fraud allegation. We are also asking inputs from the Interior Ministry and the Legal and Human Rights Ministry relating to the foreign NGO Greenpeace`s form," he said.

Meanwhile, the Alliance of Students Reject Foreign NGOs coordinator Rudy Gani said that he has visited Police Headquarters` Criminal Investigation Department to question the follow-up of its report on the matter several days ago.

Rudy said Greenpeace had always claimed it had 30 thousand donors who each contributed Rp75 thousand per month.

That means that Greenpeace received donation from the community amounting to Rp2.250.000.000 per month or equivalent to Rp27 billion per year. However, in its financial statements in 2009 and 2010 which was published in two leading Indonesian newspapers on Thursday, October 25, 2011, Greenpeace only mentioned to have accepted donation amounting to Rp6.5 billion in 2009, and Rp10.2 billion in 2010.

"We are not accusing it because Greenpeace is always transparent. We are only wondering about the Rp17 billion differences. Where are the rest of the donors` funds? Therefore, we are suspicious that Greenpeace has committed a crime of embezzlement and fraud," he said.

Besides reporting alleged embezzlement of the donors` funds, the student alliance is also seeking public information request to Greenpeace Indonesia due to the fact that there has never been open and clear statement to the public about the foreign organization`s donation and aid management system.

"Greenpeace`s statement which claims to be highly transparent in financial matters is far from reality. Therefore, Greenpeace Indonesia is suspected to have lied and violated Law Number 14/2008 on Public Opennes," he said. (*)
