"The flood is inundating a densely populated area in Tanjungpura."
Langkat (ANTARA News) - A flood triggered by high rainfalls over the past few days affected three subdistricts in Langkat district, North Sumatra province, on Friday.

"The flood is inundating a densely populated area in Tanjungpura," local resident Azhari Hasibuan said on Friday.

The flood-hit area is situated at Tanjungpura village in Tanjungpura subdistrict where flood waters reached a height of 30 meters, he said.

A flood also inundated Pujidadi hamlet in Batang Serangan subdistrict due to the overflowing of Tenang river. Hundreds of houses were inundated.

"The flood began to inundate the area this morning after Tenang river overflowed," Hasibuan said.

"Because of the high precipitation, rain falls in Batang Serangan almost everyday causing the Tenang river to overflow," he said.

Separately, on Friday, spokesman of the Batang Serangan subdistrict administration Syaifullah confirmed the overflowing of Tenang river which caused flood waters to inundate densely populated Sei Bambang village.

He feared if heavy rains continued to fall the river would overflow and the flood would spread to other areas.

A flood also inundated Paluh Manis, Pasiran, Pekan Gebang and Pasar Rawa villages on Friday after rains fell in the villages overnight.

By Friday afternoon, the flood waters began to recede, local resident Solihin said.
