Palu, Central Sulawesi (ANTARA News) - Three Japanese scientists who are studying the earthquake in Palu will provide training to students and the local community on Friday.

The scientists are Junji Kiyono from Kyoto University and Yusuke Ono and Tatsuya Noguchi from Tottori University.

As a speaker in the scientific seminar titled "Earthquake Observation and Mitigation of Natural Disasters" which was held at Tadulako University, Junji Kiyono compared the 2004 earthquake in Aceh with the 2011 earthquake in Japan.

He noted the similarities in the earthquakes, which caused a tsunami in Aceh and Japan, respectively. In both cases, the waves rose slowly at first, and about 10 seconds later, their speed increased.

Kiyono expressed his interest in performing research in Palu, a region that is geographically similar to Japan.

In addition, Yusuke Ono and Tatsuya Noguchi presented a new tool to measure earthquake tremors.

According to Noguchi, a sensor is needed to measure the strength of a tremor, because tremors occur on the surface of the earth and cannot be felt by humans.

He added that a few hertz of seismic tremors can come from anything, such as industrial activities, vehicles on the highway or volcanic eruptions.

Subagyo, an earthquake researcher from Gadjah Mada University, said that Palu was chosen as the study site because it bypassed an earthquake fracture.

The researchers are planning to drill into Gawalise mountain in Palu district.(*)
