Jakarta, June 2 (ANTARA) - Pieter Dietmar Helmut, a German tourist who was shot while walking in Jayapura, Papua, was evacuated to a Singapore hospital on Saturday morning.

He was transported by a Medivac aircraft that also stopped in Denpasar, Bali, to pick up portable oxygen needed by Helmut during the flight, Senior Commissioner dr Ramon, the head of the Papua Police`s medical unit, said here Saturday.

"The patient needs portable oxygen, the plane does not have an adequate oxygen supply, so it has to get it in Denpasar," Ramon said.

Helmut, 55, was taken to Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore to treat his shotgun wounds. During the flight to Singapore, he was accompanied by dr Fazil bin Jaffar and nurse Chua Chin Chin.

The shooting occurred when Helmut and his wife, Eva Medina - a Spanish national - were walking along Base G Beach, Jayapura, during the morning of May 29. At about 11:30 am, according to officials, a silver-coloured car suddenly stopped near them and one of its passengers alighted from the car and shot Helmut in the chest.

A team of doctors had earlier performed surgery to stop the bleeding from Pieper`s shotgun wounds.

The police in Jayapura, Papua, have so far questioned four witnesses regarding the shooting. ***1***
