Palembang, S Sumatra, June 3 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian national swimming team finished second in the Southeast Asian age group swimming tournament at the Jakabaring aquatic stadium here on June 1-3.

The Indonesian team garnered 31 golds, 31 silvers and 20 bronzes, or one gold behind champion Thailand with 32 golds, 34 silvers and 33 bronzes.

In the third place was Singapore with 16 golds, 16 silvers and 26 bronzes.

Chief of the achievement development section at the All-Indonesia Swimming Association (PRSI) Elvira Nasution said on Sunday the national team`s achievement had exceeded the target set by the association.

"The PRSI executive board thanks God that the national team managed to secure the second place in this year`s age group swimming tournament after they finished fourth in the previous tournament. The achievement has met our hope because PRSI chief Hilmi Panigoro has set the target of third place," she said.

"Admittedly, this tournament merely gave athletes competitive experience at international level so the PRSI executive board did not use it as a means to select national athletes. After all, we believe the event will produce excellent swimmers," she said.

Indonesia fielded 31 athletes and Thailand 91 athletes to the tournament. The two teams tightly competed with one another in collecting medals.

Indonesia led the first day of the tournament with 12 golds, with Thailand trailing behind in the second place with 9 golds.

Indonesia was one gold ahead of Thailand on the second day of the tournament, with 31 golds, 31 silvers and 20 bronzes.(*)
