Tehran (ANTARA News) - Iran`s foreign ministry congratulated Egypt on the election of the Muslim Brotherhood`s candidate Mohamed Moursi as the country`s new president, the Press TV reported on Sunday.

In a statement issued Sunday, the Iranian foreign ministry said that the incoming Egyptian president would "play an effective role in the all-out growth and excellence of the country and the initiation of a transformative era" in Egypt`s history.

Head of Egypt`s Higher Presidential Election Commission Farouq Sultan announced Sunday afternoon that Moursi has won the presidential election.

Moursi, now chairman of the Brotherhood`s Freedom and Justice Party, got 51.73 percent of all the votes in the run-off round, defeating his rival Ahmed Shafiq who got 48.27 percent.
