Jakarta (ANTARA News) - As of March 2012, the number of poor people in Indonesia has decreased from 30.02 million people seen last year to 29.13 million this year--a remarkable 890,000 people decrease in the number, said Chairman of National Statistic Agency Suryamin here on Monday.

"The number of poor people in 2012 has decreased by 890,000, when compared with the last year`s number," affirmed the chairman.

He explained that the number of poor people in urban areas within the last one year has decreased from 11.05 million people to 10.65 million. Meanwhile the number of poor people in rural areas has decreased from 18.97 million people to 18.48 million.

Chief among the factors that contribute to this trend is the improvement made in the payment to the labor sector during the first quarter of 2011 and first quarter of 2012, Suryamin explained.

He noted most of poor people in Indonesia (around 16.11 million people) are residing on the Java island.
