"Borobudur has officially been listed as the world`s largest Buddhist temple in the Guinness World Records in London, Britain, under Claim No. 396-198," said Purnomo Siswoprasetjo, the director of PT TWC (temple tourist park) Borobudur, Prambanan andJakarta (ANTARA News) - The Guinness World Records has officially listed Indonesia`s Borobudur temple as the largest Buddhist monument in the world.
"Borobudur has officially been listed as the world`s largest Buddhist temple in the Guinness World Records in London, Britain, under Claim No. 396-198," said Purnomo Siswoprasetjo, the director of PT TWC (temple tourist park) Borobudur, Prambanan and Ratu Boko, here on Wednesday.
The listing was done on June 27, 2012. However, the temple was added to UNESCO`s World Heritage list in 1991, under Claim No. 592.
Purnomo said the official certificate from Guinness World Records had been sent to PT TWC Borobudur, Prambanan and Ratu Boko, in Yokyakarta, from the central office of Guinness World Records in London.
"Borobudur temple has become an official Guinness World Records title-holder," he stated.
Purnomo expressed hope that the listing of the temple, built in 750-842 BC, would increase its popularity worldwide.
He said the number of visitors to the temple, sprawled over an area of 60,000 square metres, continued to increase. In 2011, it was recorded at 250,000, up 15 percent from 2010.
"Until the first quarter this year, there has been an increase of around 16 percent," Purnomo noted.
He said he was now waiting for the listing of Prambanan temple in the Guinness World Records.
Besides the two temples, Purnomo added, he would also register the Ramayana Dance, which has been regularly staged at Prambanan since ages, for a listing in the Guinness World Records.(*)
