Jakarta (ANTARA News) - ASEAN secretary general Dr. Surin Pitsuwan expressed concern over alleged unfair treatment of Muslim Rohingya community in Myanmar.

Dr Surin said he had discussed that matter with Myanmar Foreign Minister U Wunna Maung Lwin and Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dipu Moni in a meeting earlier this week in Phnom Penh.

The two foreign ministers agreed to cooperate to sort out that problem , Dr Surin said in a statement issued here on Sunday.

The Rohingya ethnic group mostly Muslims live in North Rakhin in West Myanmar.

The Myanmar government has been accused of being discriminating against the minority Muslim community and has so far not recognized their Myanmar citizenship.

Dr Surin said the Myanmar and Bangladesh foreign ministers promised to continue to monitor the situation in North Rakhin and report to ASEAN.

In July 2009, ASEAN foreign ministers asked the ASEAN secretariat to continue to monitor the condition in that area.

Dr. Surin said he appreciated the sympathy shown by ASEAN in general to the problem faced by the Rohingya community.
