"Coconut can be used in various commodities."
Gorontalo (ANTARA News) - Supported by the Indonesian Science Academy (AIPI), the Gorontalo State University (UNG) is planning to set up an international coconut research centre to develop more export products, according to UNG Rector Syamsu Qomar Badu.

He said here on Tuesday that the research, which would be carried out in cooperation with AIPI, a prestigious institution, was expected to explore coconut resources in Gorontalo.

"The AIPI will provide all the necessary support and resources to UNG," Syamsu added.

He expressed hope that international coconut research centre would be the second-biggest educational and research institution, following UNG, in Gorotalo.

Sulawesi, particularly Gorontlo, also known as the "Coconut Island", has abundant resources, Gorontalo AIPI Genetics Chairman F.G. Winarno, who is also a professor at the Bogor Agriculture Institute of Food Technology.

"Coconut can be used in various commodities. Its fibre is used to make the seats of world's finest cars, while the oil is a substitute for aviation turbine fuel fuel," he added.

Coconut water also replenishes and rehydrates the body better than regular water. (Uu.LPW/INE/KR-BSR/F001)
