Makassar (ANTARA News) - The number of incoming and outgoing passengers via Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport already exceeded the target set for 2017

PT Angkasa Pura I, the state owned airport operator, said the target set for 2017 is 7 million, but so far this year the number of departures and arrivals already exceeded 8 million.

The target for 2017 was already overshot in 2011 when the number of departures and arrivals was recorded at 7.5 million, General manager the Makassar branch of PT Angkasa Pura I Rachman Syafrie said .

Currently there are 220 flights everyday with 34 destinations including two foreign countries Malaysia and Singapore from the airport.

With the growing number of passengers, up around 11 percent a year, the company is looking for way to deal with the shortfall in capacity before new terminal is built and operational, Rachma said here on Friday .

He said it will take time before new terminal will come on stream, he said, adding the plan to build new terminal is still in the phase of land clearing.

He said one way of dealing with possible problem is by moving company office to other place in the city to give space for terminal.

He said Sultan Hasanuddin airport is the largest and most important in eastern and central parts of the country.

The position of the airport is strategic in South Sulawesi as the main gate for eastern Indonesia, he said.(Uu.AS/H-ASG/B/H-YH)
