There are seven jailhouses on the island of Nusakambangan for different categories of criminals.
Cilacap, Central Java (ANTARA News) - More than half or 1,276 of 2,336 inmates of the Nusakambangan penitentiary have their prison terms cut including 32 walking out free from the country`s largest and notorious penitentiary on the occasion of the country`s Independence Day on August 17.

The penitentiary of Nusakambangan, an island a few miles south of Cilacap in southern coast of Central Java is notorious for housing criminals of serious offenses including hardened criminals, murderers, corruption and drug convicts.

Among the inmates include 53 death row prisoners, and 74 convicts serving life imprisonment, head of the penitentiary Hermawan Yulianto said

There are seven jailhouses on the island of Nusakambangan for different categories of criminals.

The remissions were granted symbolically in a ceremony headed by Cilacap regent Tatto Suwarto Pamuji to two selected inmates at the penitentiary auditorium on Friday.

Hermawan said more inmates are expected to receive remission on the occasion of Idul Fitri Islamic holy day on Sunday and Monday.

He said he had recommended a number of prisoners entitled to remission on the occasions but he refused to give name as decision has not yet been received.
