Balinese farmers have started developing organic coffee plantations using natural fertilizers.
Denpasar (ANTARA News) - Bali`s coffee exports rose to 9.2 tons in the first semester from 3.7 tons in the same period last year, provincial administration spokesman I Ketut Teneng said.

Bali earned US$118,178 from the coffee exports in the period up from US$57,534 in the same period last year, he said here on Thursday.

Coffee is one of the island`s plantation products that is able to penetrate export markets besides vanilla.

Vanilla exports from the tourist island however have continued to drop reaching only 200 kilograms worth US$7,996 in the first semester this year down from 38.5 tons worth US$620,568 in the same period last year, he said.

Teneng said exports of coffee and vanilla in the form of processes products depend upon supply and demand.

He said Balinese farmers have started developing organic coffee plantations using natural fertilizers.

He said processed coffee beans had been exported to Japan, France and several European countries.

In 2011 production of coffee beans reached 3,080 tons down from 3,245 from the previous year, due to weather conditions which were not conducive.

He said coffee plantations had been expanded now reaching 10,485 hectares up from previously 9,448 hectares.
