"Therefore, Indonesia is committed strongly to achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by 2019," the vice president stated.
However, the possibility of a pandemic resulting from the spread of contagious diseases can hamper the attempt for achieving UHC for the creation of better socio-economic conditions for the Indonesian people, Boediono said.
"A strong commitment from all countries is badly needed for the implementation of the International Health Regulation (IHR) 2005 as part of the national, regional and global health security framework," he added.
The vice president also pointed out that the number of elderly people in the South East Asia region is expected to go up going forward.
"We need to develop and strengthen the national and regional relevant policies, secure the health services system, improve health facilities, and provide sufficient human resources to deal with this eventuality," the vice president said.
Boediono also expressed hope that the WHO SEARO health ministerial meeting will provide the momentum that is needed for strengthening the efforts aimed at achieving a higher level of public health in the participating countries.
Health Minister Nafsiah Mboi pointed out that delegations from countries such as Bangladesh, Bhutan, South Korea, India, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Timor Leste are participating in the meeting, which has been hosted by Indonesia.
WHO`s Director General Margaret Chan and the WHO South East Asia regional director Samlee Plianbangchang will also attend the meeting.(*)
