"The exports of Bali`s live ornamental fish have been fluctuating this year."
Denpasar, Bali (ANTARA News) - Bali`s exports of ornamental fish reached US$1.2 million during January-August 2012, up 16.65 percent from the same period last year.

"In August 2012, Bali exported as many as 152,518 live fish worth a total of US$63,418," Head of Bali Marine and Fishery Department I Made Gunaja said here on Thursday.

The number of fish exported from January through August this year reached 843,986 - an increase of 6.73 percent compared with the 790,786 fish exported during the same period in 2011.

"The exports of Bali`s live ornamental fish have been fluctuating this year," Gunaja noted.

"However, the process of exporting live ornamental fish has become smoother, thanks to the increased cooperation from professional businessmen and improved air transportation facilities. The shipping risks have been reduced and the products arrive at their destination countries, such as Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, the United States and other European countries, on time," he pointed out.

Bali waters are rich in marine life and are home to hundreds of colorful ornamental fish species. Some of the most beautiful fish in the world can be found in the waters off Tulamben (Karangasem Regency), Nusa Lembongan (Klungkung Regency) and Buleleng Regency.

"The fish are mostly favoured by marine life lovers, particularly overseas collectors," Gunaja stated.
