Palu, C Sulawesi (ANTARA News) - Rabies is still a feared disease in Central Sulawesi with more than 100 known cases reported every year.

Every year, there are always cases of rabies in the province of 3.6 million people , Head of the provincial health office Greesje Kuhu said here Tuesday.

"The government needs to address the problem ," Kuhu said, adding Central Sulawesi is one of areas still facing the threat of the fatal disease in the country.

He said every year the provincial authorities launched mass vaccination but had not succeeded in reducing or eliminating the disease .

He said in 2011 there were 128 rabies cases in the province, up from 103 in 2010 after being reduced from 132 cases in 2009.

Among 10 regencies in Central Sulawesi Poso has the largest number of rabies cases accounting for 98 of the total number of rabies cases in 2011.

In the first six months of the year, Poso already had 68 rabies cases, Kuhu said.(*)
