Medan, N Sumatra (ANTARA News) - A flash flood destroyed at least 40 houses at Garongan village in South Tapanuli district, North Sumatra, on Monday night, a spokesman said.

The flood occurred after Batang Selai River overflowed due to high rainfalls, Head of the North Sumatra Provincial Natural Disaster Mitigation Board (BPBD) Ahmad Hidayat said on Tuesday.

No fatalities or injuries were reported in the flood.

By 01.00 p.m. on Tuesday the flood water still inundated the villages.

Hidayat said 10 of the 40 houses were seriously damaged, 15 lightly damaged and 15 carried away by water currents.

The South Tapanuli District Disaster Mitigation Body has set up a command post to help those falling victim to the flood, he said.
