"Women and mothers in particular have a crucial role to play in national development."
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesian First Lady Ani Yudhoyono has called on the country`s women to play a more active role in the development of the nation.

"The role of family is important in any society and mothers are the core of a family. Education for children starts from the family, particularly education on character development, before they step outside into the real world," she said during a meeting with some members of Dharma Wanita, an association of civil servants` wives, here on Monday.

"Women and mothers in particular have a crucial role to play in national development. They can encourage children to be positive and have compassion for others," the First Lady stated.

"We know that national development is dependent on the welfare of the nation's communities. And social life begins from the family," she added.

The meeting with Dharma Wanita members was part of the activities to celebrate the 84th Mothers` Day this year.

The First Lady was accompanied by Herawati Boediono (the spouse of Vice President Boediono), Defence Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro, Minister of Women`s Empowerment and Child Protection Linda Amaliasari, Dharma Wanita chairperson Nila F Moeloek, and Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo.
