"In 2011, many people were affected by leptospirosis."
Yogyakarta (ANTARA News) - Yogyakarta`s Health Department has informed the residents that leptospirosis can spread in the city during the rainy season.

"In 2011, many people were affected by leptospirosis. We have sent an official letter, warning the residents of Yogyakarta about this disease," said Tuty Setyowati, Head of Yogyakarta's Health Department, on Friday.

Leptospirosis is a disease that spreads through the urine of mice. The risk of contracting this disease increases during the rainy season. Hence, Setyowati said people should be careful. They should lead a healthy life and keep the environment clean.

The Department of Health has also urged the residents of Yogyakarta to clean their neighbourhood at least once a week, to reduce the population of mice.

According to the Health Department, dozens of people had contracted the disease in December. As of today, no individual has died of leptospirosis.

Since Umbulharjo has a high population density, there is a possibility that leptospirosis will spread quickly in this region. Umbulharjo has the highest population density as compared to other 13 regions in Yogyakarta.

"There are large farms in Umbulharjo, which serve as breeding grounds for mice. Hence, it is important to take the necessary precautions to control the population of mice," said Setyowati.

During the rainy season, avian influenza (H5N1) also spreads quickly, said Setyowati.

According to the Agriculture Bureau of the Industry, Trade, Cooperative and the Agriculture Department of Yogyakarta, 24 people have been suspected of contracting avian influenza. Three people have contracted avian influenza.

Benny Nurhantoro, Head of Agriculture for Yogyakarta, said the government is providing free disinfectants to farmers so that they can keep their farms clean. This way, they will be able to prevent the spread of avian influenza.

"We are providing free avian disinfectants to farmers. They can come to our office to collect the products," said Nurhantoro.
