Malang, E. Java (ANTARA News) - Consuming black tea is one of effective ways to reduce obesity, expert of Molecular Genetic from Brawijaya University in Malang, East Java, Prof Fatchiyah has said.

"The effect of `catechin` in black tea that is consumed for 90 days will reduce weight significantly as the substance is able to obstruct insulin-like Growth Factor (IGF-1) as an integrated ligand with its receptor," said Fatchiyah here on Wednesday.

According to him several research has been done to discover the way to decrease obesity such as by consuming herbal resources which consist of green tea, black tea, fruit-mixed juice and vegetables, also with other herbal materials.

Previously, people only knew green tea as their diet menu to lose the weight.

"But currently, we have a research that the black tea can reduce weight effectively," said Fatchiyah.

She added that several researches on black tea savor have been done included by test on obesity rat that result a success on reducing the weight significantly.

Other "in vitro" research on black tea to reduce obesity also done by "adiposa" cell culturing that shows "adipogenesis" retardation and increased "apoptosis" by adding "Epigallocatechin Gallate" (EGCG) 200.

In order to clarify cathechin on "adipogenesis" retardation, the research that conducted by Firdausi is continued by "in silico" analysis which resulted catechin that obstruct IGF-1R.

However, the analysis did not produce protein of IGF-1, said Fatchiyah.

"The research result showed that boiled black tea have potential natural bioactive to therapy preventive for reducing obesity," said Fatchiyah.

Obesity is a condition of fat tissue mass excess that occurred in body and caused by the metabolic abnormalities which can increases risk on morbidity in several human system such as high blood pressure, cardiac disease, stroke, coroner disease, depression and low confident. (*)
