Bekasi, West Java (ANTARA News) - Flood water has inundated more than one thousand houses in three housing complexes in the Jatiasih sub-district in Bekasi, West Java, after heavy rain poured the area from Wednesday evening to Thursday morning.

"The flood water submerged several residences in the Buana Jaya housing complex, the Graha Indah complex, and the Nasio complex," said Chairman of Bekasi Disaster Mitigation Team (Tagana) Engkus Kustara here on Thursday.

According to him, the flood was caused by malfunction of water channels in the area that blocked water flow since Wednesday.

"Heavy rain occurred since 16.00 to 19.00 pm on Wednesday and continued on 20.30 pm to Thursday morning," Engkus said.

He admitted besides many properties cars, motorcycles and several electronic equipment have also been under water.

Engkus said several people in the area had been surprised by the water level that reached 1.5 meters.

"We do not know how many cars have been submerged but we believe their number is quite bid," Engkus said.

The Tagana is deploying at least 50 members to along with scout members assist flood victims` evacuation.

"There are no information of casualties and injured people yet due to the disaster. We are evacuating people who live in a single floor house," Engkus said.

According to him, the Bekasi administration has provided water pumps in three housing complexes to speed-up water disposal.

"The Bekasi administration has also established an emergency food supplying facility to help victims in the area," Engkus added.
