The last monitoring mission to there took place in 2004...United Nations (ANTARA News/Xinhua-OANA) - The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) said that it will send an expert mission to examine the state of conservation of Jerusalem`s Old City and its Walls, a World Heritage site, UN spokesman Martin Nesirky told reporters here.
"The last monitoring mission to there took place in 2004, and the next one will take place following requests by the World Heritage Committee in 2010, 2011 and last year," Nesirky said at a daily news briefing, Wednesday (April 24).
Israel has agreed to allow UNESCO to inspect sites in Jerusalem in exchange for the postponing of five Palestinian-sponsored resolutions critical of Israel. The deal, reached on Tuesday, was brokered by the United States, Russia and Jordan, reports said.
The Paris-based UNESCO accepted the Palestinian Authority as a full member in 2011, prompting the United States to cut funding to the UN agency in the wake of the vote. Israel also cut off its contribution.
UNESCO inspectors will look at the Old City of Jerusalem and its walls, including the Western Wall and the Mughrabi Bridge to the Temple Mount as part of an "action plan" to inspect and safeguard the cultural heritage of the Old City of Jerusalem, said the reports.
