"Hundreds of joint security personnel have been deployed to safeguard restoration efforts undertaken along Kebon Jati Street, which is home to Tanah Abang Market, after the relocation of hundreds of mobile street traders (PKL)," said Tanah Abang Military Rayon Commander Captain Infatery Suratno in an interview with ANTARA on Tuesday.
Several personnel of Public Works Sub-official, Sanitation Sub-official, and Transportation Sub-official spruced pathways and street barriers, and cleared trash in the area.
Suratno said street vendors did not object to the relocation efforts undertaken by the DKI Jakarta Regional Government.
"However, security personnel will carry out persuasive action against street vendors if they conduct trade along the street," he added.
A total of 40 police officers, 15 TNI soldiers, 10 Traffic Police officers, and 80 Civil Service Police will safeguard the place.
Meanwhile, 100 officers of Sanitation Sub-official, 24 personnel of Public Works Sub-official, and 10 officers of Transportation Sub-official will look into the restoration efforts along Jalan Kebon Jati.
With regard to hoodlums who protect the street vendors in Tanah Abang, Suratno said security officers will act decisively to maintain orderliness.
"So far, we have not come across any misbehaviour. If there are threats from hoodlums, we will act accordingly," Captain Suratno said.
Tanah Abang Market is a wholesale shopping centre in Central Jakarta and is popular outside Indonesia too as many tourists have purchased goods at this market.
