Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono led a midnight observance of silence at Kalibata Heroes` Cemetery in commemoration of the country`s 68th independence anniversary on August 17.

The ceremony was part of several functions to mark the country`s independence from the Netherlands declared on August 17, 1945 by the late Soekarno flanked by Mohammad Hatta who later became the first president and vice president of Indonesia.

On Saturday morning President Yudhoyono is scheduled to lead a ceremony at the state palace marking moments of the independence`s proclamation. (P008/YH)
