Medan, North Sumatra (ANTARA News) - The police managed to catch 17 prisoners who escaped from Labuhan Ruku Prison after a riot and fire broke out in Class2A penitentiary on Sunday afternoon.

"We have locked 12 detainees at Labuhan Ruku Sector Police Headquarters. Two of the detainees are at Lima Puluh Sector Police Office," said Chief of Batubara Resort Police Senior Commissioner Adjunct Sinaga on Monday.

The other three detainees are being accompanied by their parents and will surrender at the nearest police office.

The police has evacuated 25 female detainees at Labuhan Ruku penitentiary.

"Given the condition of the damaged prison, we have shifted 26 female detainees from Labuhan Ruku to Tanjung Balai penitentiary," Sinaga said.

He added that one of the female detainees is pregnant, and the police has taken her to a hospital.

Batubara Resort Police will coordinate with other police headquarters in North Sumatra and provide the details of the detainees.

"Besides, North Sumatra Regional Police Headquarters has cooperated with other regional police bodies such as Riau Police and Aceh Police. We will hold daily inspections and collect information about the escapees," Sinaga said.

He added the police will investigate the cause of fire at the prison which resulted in the escape of 30 detainees.

"We will question the 12 detainees caught by Labuhan Ruku Police to get the necessary details," said Sinaga.
