Jember, East Java (ANTARA News) - Five fishing boats sank leaving two people missing in the sea off the regency of Jember, East Java, on Friday.

"Big waves hit five fishing boats in the Plawangan Puger waters when they were on their way ashore and two of the fishermen are still missing," head of Jember coast guards Adj. Comr Lukman Hadi said here on Friday.

Lukman said the first boat sank early on Friday when it was still dark at 01.00 local time with six people on board .

Four of the fishermen managed to swim to safety and the other two identified as Kampek (40) and Wakdak (46) were missing, he said.

The boat loaded with fish sank causing a total loss of around Rp85 million, he said.

The second incident took place in the morning at 07.000 in about the same location , but all on board were safe but they lost their ship loaded with fish .

Not long after three other fishing boats sank in the same general area when the previous two ill fated boats capsized and sank all loaded with fish, but all fishermen were safe.

A search and rescue team is still looking for the missing fishermen.
