Surabaya (ANTARA News) - An African buffalo and baboon reportedly died at the Surabaya Zoo, in East Java.

"The two animals died due to old age," KBS zoo spokesman Agus Supangat stated here on Friday.

He added that the female African baboon died at around 2 a.m., on Thursday, while the African buffalo died at around 7a.m., on the same day.

He claimed that before their deaths, the animals were ill and under quarantine where they were treated and monitored round the clock.

Based on autopsy results, the African buffalo, named Nike, died when his lungs malfunctioned and joints suffered damage, while the baboon died due to lymph and liver disorders, for which it was being treated for the past six weeks.

"The female baboon was the last of its species at the zoo. After her death, we now have no baboons. With regard to African buffaloes, there are only two remaining at the zoo," he emphasized.

The two animals were among the 84 animals that were reportedly under critical condition.

The zoo has earlier reported that 44 of its animals are now seriously ill and physically impaired. Hence, they need to be isolated in order to give them special treatment.

In the meantime, 40 other animals are already old, including a female elephant who is already 24 years old and a lion.

A total of 33 birds are now sick, old, and impaired, he remarked.

The zoo has recently drawn public attention after some of its animals were found tragically dead in their cages due to old age or unforeseen incidents.
