Samarinda (ANTARA News) - East Kalimantan police foiled an attempt to smuggle crystal methamphetamine and ecstasy drugs at Semayang seaport, Balikpapan, East Kalimanan province, an officer said on Saturday.

A total of 12,000 ecstasy pills and one kilogram of methamphetamine were confiscated, as drug dealers attempted to smuggle the drugs into Balikpapan from Surabaya (East Java province), Senior Commissioner Fajar Setiawan, the police spokesman, said.

"On Friday evening (Feb 21), at around 21.30 pm local time, the East Kalimantan police stopped an attempt to smuggle in packages of drugs by ferry boat from Surabaya, East Java. The illicit drugs, consisting of 12,000 ecstasy pills and one kilogram of methamphetamine, were found inside a Suzuki Swift car which was about to leave the ferry at the Semayang seaport," Setiawan said.

The police arrested a man, identified by his initial as TH, when he picked up the car from the ferry.

The arrest was made following a tip from the public about the drug shipment from Surabaya, he explained.

Several days ago, the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) and East Kalimantan authorities prevented an attempt to smuggle in four kilograms of methamphetamine from Tawau, Malaysia, into the province.

The crystal methamphetamine, worth Rp4 billion or around US$300 thousand, was seized from four suspected drug traffickers at an apartment on AW Syahranie St., Samarinda, on February 18.

The BNN and East Kalimantan Narcotics Agency also arrested four people, identified as Dedi, Irwan, Rustam, and Agus, also known as Ceng or Andi. One of them is believed to be a major drug dealer who smuggled the methamphetamine crystal from Tawau.

Three of the suspects are residents of Nunukan, and one of them is from the Sebatik Island.

Spokesperson of the East Kalimantan Narcotics Agency, Commissioner Muhammad Daud, noted that the delivery of the crystal methamphetamine was monitored by police before the drugs were brought to Indonesia.
