BI is convinced the inflation rate can be kept down to the lower level."
Medan, Noth Sumatra (ANTARA News) - Bank Indonesia (BI) Governor Agus Martowardojo has stated that the economy still faces tough challenges, though this year it is performing better than last year.

"Therefore, BI, regional governments and other stakeholders must intensify their cooperation in stabilizing the economy," he said here on Friday.

Agus noted that the national economy is influenced not only by the domestic situation, but also the global economy.

Although the domestic economy has begun improving, the impact of the global crisis, including low demand for the countrys export commodities, is still felt, thereby challenging the economy, he noted.

BI, itself, has made every effort to curb the impact to maintain high economic growth by keeping inflation rates in check through its inflation control team, he said.

"BI is convinced the inflation rate can be kept down to the lower level," he said.

The BI governor was in the North Sumatra provincial capital of Medan as Difi Ahmad Johansyah became chief of the central banks representative office for North Sumatra and Aceh provinces, replacing Hari Utomo.

Hari Utomo will later become a member of the expert staff of the BI board of governors, and focus on developing BI offices throughout the country. Difi A. Johansyah was formerly executive director of the BI communication department in Jakarta.

Agus said the replacement of the chief of the BI representative office in Medan is part of the efforts to support the role of its domestic representative offices.
