... has confirmed Bali Zoo's success in conserving endangered species... "
Gianyar, Bali (ANTARA News) - A baby Javan lutung (Trachypithecus auratus) was born in Bali Zoo on June 13, the zoo's spokesperson Emma Kristiana Chandra said here Thursday.

The newly born endangered primate was named after Unggul and is currently under the supervision of Bali Zoo's veterinarians, she said.

The birth of the animal that is endemic to certain parts of Indonesia, such as Java, Bali, and Lombok of West Nusa Tenggara, has confirmed Bali Zoo's success in conserving endangered species, she said.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) had entered the primate, which is also called Javan langur and ebony leaf monkey, in its red list in 2008 as a result of its declining population.

According to the IUCN, the major threats of Javan lutung's habitat are due to the "expanding agriculture and human settlements, hunting for food, and increasingly due to pet trade, fragmentation, and small isolated populations."
