Moscow (ANTARA News) - Moscow strongly protested over the shelling of Russian territory by the Ukrainian military and demanded an immediate investigation of this provocative act, Russian Foreign Ministry said Friday night.

Russia lodged solemn protest over the aggressive action and demanded for an urgent and prompt investigation. It was a blunt provocation aimed at disrupting the Geneva accord, the ministry said.

The Novoshakhtinsk border checkpoint in Russia's southern Rostov region came under shelling by the Ukrainian military Friday night. Damages were made and a customs officer was severely wounded, according to the ministry.

A combat broke out between the militias who controlled the Ukrainian Dolzhansky border checkpoint and Ukrainian soldiers. Buildings, infrastructure and communication facilities of the Novoshakhtinsk checkpoint have been damaged in the mortar fire, the Itar-Tass news agency quoted the Russian Border Guard Service as saying.

However, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry issued a statement shortly afterwards claiming that Ukrainian military have not been using mortars in the Ukrainian-Russian border areas
