Palu, Central Sulawesi (ANTARA News) - Some 4,530 hectares of rice fields were inundated in West Toili Subdistrict, Banggai District, Central Sulawesi, on Sunday (August 10).

"The rice fields measuring thousands of hectares, which were damaged after being hit by flash floods, are located in several villages in West Toili Subdistrict, Banggai District," Head of the Central Sulawesi Disaster Mitigation Office (BPBD) Bartholomeus Tandigala said here on Monday.

The flash floods had also damaged two bridges, and some 15 thousand villagers were forced to take refuge in emergency tents set up by Banggai authorities.

Central Sulawesi Governor Longki Djanggola has instructed the BPBD head to dispatch rescuers and relief aid for the flood victims. One villager had gone missing.

Flash floods had submerged 16 villages in Toili and West Toili subdistricts in Banggai District, following incessant heavy rains over the last several days. Banggai is an agricultural district, which is the major rice supplier in Central Sulawesi Province.

Floods have also affected several residential areas in Palu City following downpours over the last two days.

The local meteorological office had issued a warning that extreme weather might hit several regions in the province.
