Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has entrusted President-elect Joko Widodo, better known as Jokowi, with the responsibility of ably carrying forward the Master Plan for Acceleration and Expansion of Indonesia Economic Development (MP3EI).

"I have entrusted our next president, Pak Jokowi, with what we have achieved in the framework of MP3EI so that he can go ahead with it in better manner," Yudhoyono stated during a meeting to review and highlight three years of MP3EI implementation here on Friday.

Present at the gathering were Vice President Boediono, President-elect Joko Widodo, and numerous cabinet ministers including Economic Minister Chairul Tanjung, National Development Planning Minister Armida S. Alisjahbana, and Public Works Minister Djoko Kirmanto.

During the meeting, President Yudhoyono noted that the MP3EI, which was launched in May 2011, to help Indonesia in accelerating and expanding economic development to support its transformation to a developed country by 2025, integrates three main elements.

The first of the three main elements focuses on developing six Indonesian economic corridors by establishing centers of development within every corridor and developing industrial clusters and special economic zones based on advanced commodities and resources.

The second element lays emphasis on strengthening national connectivity, which includes intra- and inter-connectivity of development centers, inter-islands (corridors), and international trade.

The third element stresses on acceleration of national science and technology to support the development of the main program.

The president remarked that the MP3EI has six growth centers or economic corridors, which are Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Bali-East Nusa Tenggara, and Papua-Maluku Islands.

He affirmed that the main strategy of the master plan is to achieve economic development by focusing on these six economic corridors, by strengthening national connectivity throughout the archipelago, and by strengthening human resource capabilities, science, and technology.

The master plan also outlines eight primary programs that encompass agriculture, mining, energy, industrial, marine, tourism, telecommunications, and the development of strategic areas.(*)
